He was born in Gaul in 340. As a learned man and great speaker, he was elected Bishop of Milan. Because of his preaching and writing, he was proclaimed the first Doctor of the Church. He had the satisfaction of witnessing the conversion and baptism of the great Saint Augustine, whom he baptized in 387. After a life of labor and prayer the Holy Bishop of Milan died in 397.

There is a legend that as an infant, a swarm of bees settled on his face while he lay in his cradle, leaving behind a drop of honey. His father considered this a sign of his future eloquence and honeyed tongue. The word for honey in Latin is ambrosia. He is patron saint of beekeepers and honey makers. For this reason, bees and beehives often appear in the saint’s symbology
