October 18 St. Luke
To Do: One of my children’s middle name is Luke, and I always use this feast day to remind him of his namesake. Otherwise, he would continue to think he was named after Luke Skywalker. Like I do for anyone’s saint’s day, I let my Gabriel Luke choose the dessert.
Luke was a physician, the only Gentile writer in the New Testament—he wrote both his Gospel and The Acts of the Apostles, and was a close companion of St. Paul. Luke was also an artist. There are a few famous works of art that some say St. Luke painted. The most famous one being the Black Madonna of Czestochowa. This beautiful and mysterious painting of Mary is worth pulling up online and showing to the family.
To Eat:
Each of the four gospel writers has a symbol. Luke's symbol is a bull, usually with wings. The bull was a symbol of sacrifice, and Luke's gospel emphasizes the sacrifice of Christ. You could use this symbol on a cookie or cupcake. But if you are lucky like me and have a Luke, you can just let your Luke name the dessert. It will probably be something simple like brownies! You could also serve beef today.
To Pray:
The Collect
Almighty God, who inspired your servant Luke the physician to set forth in the Gospel the love and healing power of your Son: Graciously continue in your Church this love and power to heal, to the praise and glory of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
