May 10 St. Damien of Molokai
I love the story of this modern day saint. It is both moving and beautiful. There is a good movie from 1999 of his life which was on Netflix for awhile called: Molokai: The Story of Father Damien.
Pope Benedict canonized him Oct. 11, 2009. To Eat: Perhaps to celebrate his feast day you could have something Hawaiian (Hawaiian Chicken or have you ever had this "Hawaiian Wedding Cake?")and discuss his life at your dinner table as well as ways that we can in some small way help those who are suffering. Healthy Alternative FeastingHawaiian Chicken can be made without the brown sugar (or lessened). Also, honey and molasses can be substituted.
For Dessert! There is a traditional Hawaiian treat that is always served at a Luau and is fairly Paleo/Whole 30/ GlutenFree/Sugar Free. It's called Haupia (pronounced How-Pea-Ah) and it's like a thick coconut pudding. I made it with cornstarch because I didn't have tapioca starch or arrowroot. I also know it can be made with gelatin, and subbing your favorite sugar substitute or going without. Here is a recipe: http://adamgrattonnd.blogspot.com/2013/05/recipe-hawaiian-haupia.html |
Here is a short 10 min. bio about him on YouTube
